The Cowichan Region takes its name from “Quw'utsunan”, an aboriginal word that means "the warm land”. The naming by our First Nations people was prescient because, as it turns out, Cowichan is located in Canada's only Maritime Mediterranean climatic zone, which means it is home to the warmest year round temperature anywhere in Canada.
Within all points of this vast region – from the Malahat Mountain in the south to Ladysmith in the north and Lake Cowichan and Port Renfrew to the west, the Cowichan, with its sun, healthy precipitation and fertile soil, is ideally suited for nurturing and enjoying life. Even before it became fashionable, this area has fostered amazing artisanal food and drink from the region’s burgeoning farms, wineries, cideries, distilleries, fishers and artists.
